My students need headphones for different audio projects. We create radio stories and listen to many different podcasts and audio books. So much is available in both print and audio to support all readers.
My students are incredible! They self identify as students and are working hard to reach their goals. Over 90% will be the first in their families to earn a high school diploma and they enter high school determined to graduate. However, in our district our actual graduation rate is much below 100% (closer to 60%) and for various reasons, students do not meet the goal they had when they start high school with me at 9th grade. Reading is often a barrier to a student's success and dropout rates often correlate to reading level. As students transition to high school they are asked to read to learn information not just read for pleasure and the gap in reading skills widens. Therefore, it is important to help reluctant readers stay involved with books and not lose their love of reading as the tasks get more challenging.
My students are a diverse group of learners which means they absorb information and show their learning in a variety of ways. One of the ways to differentiate and support them all is through the use of audio when reading. For many students this helps them visualize the text and internalize proper phrasing and intonation to help them be more fluent readers. We live in a time where Audible is used by everyone, teens, adults, and college students and teaching them to use this resource is important. Therefore, having headsets allows for all learners to learn in the way that suits them best.
