My school runs an after-school reading club in Middle School and I co-lead it with our fantastic librarian. We gather twice a month to discuss books, share thought-provoking passages, and expand our view of the world through reading. The students have a chance to read genres they are experts in and explore new genres.
This project will bring book sets to the students and allow the club to have several months of reading engagement planned out.
The books I am including in this project will give students opportunities to think about the historical periods covered in the book and enjoy the authors' craft of masterful storytelling.
Refugee by Alan Gratz is a great example of the characters' storylines and historical events woven into a gripping novel. Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park looks at a migration experience in the West by offering a perspective of a family moving from West to East and giving voices to characters who are often erased or ommitted. In The Last Quentista by Donna Barba Higuera the students will feel the power of storytelling and the value of stories for humanity. This book is a winner of 2022 Newbery Medal and Pura Belpré Award. Reading these books would be a great experience for our Middle School students and would foster appreciation of diverse perspectives, reading styles, and genres.
