Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title 1 school district as a special education teacher. I work with students who are in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. 95% of my students are Hispanic.
The opportunity and achievement gaps are tremendously apparent in my school district.
As a special education teacher, I do what I can with the limited supplies I have. As a special education teacher I'm expected to deliver high quality instruction on my students' individualized education plan goals, which are in the areas of basic reading skills, reading fluency, reading comprehension, writing, and mathematics (calculation and problem solving).
My Project
I teach special education in a Title 1 school district. I work with 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics. The students I work with in the subject of reading are all reading at a 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade level. Unfortunately, leveled readers for those grades are very childish. My students know they can't read the chapter books their friends are reading, but they also don't want to read the "little kid" books that are at their ability level.
The books I am requesting are specifically designed for students in a middle school but who are reading at a primary level.
The books are high interest for middle schoolers but they will continue to work on their phonics skills, CVC words, multi-syllabic words, and long and short vowels. They also contain dynamic full-color photos with engaging storylines that are teen-centric and represent a wide variety of genres
