Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 2nd grade at a low-income public elementary school with over 900 students. My students face immense challenges outside of school that they can't control. We are battling poverty, homelessness, foster care, and abuse in the homes. So what they can control is their learning and how they will succeed through hard work and determination. Even though they have challenges outside my classroom, they always bring their enthusiasm to learn and their drive to better themselves every day to class. I know my students will be successful, because I truly believe in all of them.

My Project

What are the tools of a mathematician? Pencils, erasers, and math journals! Oh, and don't forget your brain!

When I think about teaching math I envision my students not just working in their math books, but really problem solving.

They need to think about how to apply math to the real world and how to clearly explain their thinking process when solving problems. It's what they need in order to be successful in the real world, especially if my students plan to pursue a career in math and science, which I hope they do!

These math journals are fantastic! My students love having their very own math journal to solve problems, write in, struggle, share out, and practice. They even want to take it home! They are a wonderful addition to my math program, and I really hope we can get these for my students.
