My Students

My students desire to learn and overcome. They are at an inner-city school in a high poverty district and work hard to learn enough to live out their dreams despite their circumstances. Most of my students are not exposed to literature or technology outside the classroom. Please support them.

Our school is in an inner city area and provides a free college preparatory education with AP curriculum to students.

The student population is formed through a public lottery and every student that applies has had the opportunity to attend. It is ranked among the best schools in the nation. Our school does not receive traditional funds for classroom supplies, and many teachers spend their own money to support classroom needs. We are a family of individuals that spend each day striving to reach our goals and to help the world become a better educated and more pleasant place to live. My students are hard working, passionate, and hopeful. They are seeking the opportunity to attend a four-year university and live out their dreams. My students hope to be defined by their work ethic and education instead of their financial circumstances or race.

My Project

My students will use the requested supplies to interact with various texts in a multitude of ways. Great literature has characters that are complex just like my students. Character analysis is a way for students to connect with literature on a personal level. They will learn that literature from ages past can still relate to them. Students will widen their vocabulary and their understanding of the written word, as well as their reading skills, preparing them to study Huckleberry Finn, The Scarlet Letter, and Frankenstein in their future classes. By the end of the unit, students will have learned to breakdown and analyze a character and how they fit into a classic work of literature. They also evaluate and respond to the major complexities of the work, deepening their appreciation of its themes and value.

When students learn to analyze complex literature, they receive a confidence boost, proving to themselves that they are intelligent people who can actively participate in the world.

Students that have a positive attitude towards learning can achieve their goals because they know that through hard work and determination they can achieve anything. As students gain confidence in themselves, we can work through increasingly complex texts and deepen their understanding of the world.
