My Students
My students often come to school after the year has begun, as if they had just been dropped off at the front door, totally unprepared. They usually lack basic supplies, such as book bags and pencils. Supplies such as paper, colored pencils, and binders must be provided by their teachers.
The students at my school are often in our school one month, at another school within the next few months, and often back with us before the year is over.
Their transient lifestyles are part of their family environments, and through no fault of their own, they are often forced to leave their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs. They come to us with needs more basic than education. They need food, clothing, and supplies to help them to be successful in school. Regardless of the need, we work to fill them as best as we can.
My Project
This storage cabinet will be set up as a store in which students in need will have the opportunity to "shop" for items they need for their education. Local donations of supplies to stock the store will be requested as well. Students will be allowed to select their needed items rather than be given miscellaneous materials that are not necessarily matching the required materials of their classroom, or styles of items they would have selected had they been able to go to a store and shop themselves.
This opportunity is aimed to help empower our children into being responsible for their materials, class work, and in the long-term, have greater respect for their education, and taking responsibility for that in order to create a better life for themselves than what they have now.
