Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in our classroom usually starts with a recap of what we did the previous day. After that, I prefer to get them up and doing something because they learn better when they are actively engaged.
Our school is a small charter school with a unique focus in architecture and engineering.
Most of our students come from other school districts in socioeconomically depressed areas and can struggle with skills in math and science. In some cases, they didn't do well in their home districts and are looking to turn their academic careers around. Many of my students intend to continue on to college and need a lot of support and a strong high school foundation.
My Project
The ring stands, beakers, and flasks I am requesting will be used throughout the three subjects I teach (Earth Science, Physics, and Biology), but the primary class that will use them this year will be Biology.
I like to do a lot of hands-on activities and labs with my Biology students because that is the best way for them to truly understand the concepts. Unfortunately, we do not have very much lab equipment and lab groups are currently sharing the limited resources we have. We have been doing labs up until this point using canning jars, but they can not be put on hotplates (they break), so I am requesting proper lab glassware that is designed to be used with the hot plates we have.
A lack of lab equipment hasn't stopped us from experimenting, but we are very limited as to what we can and can't do. The equipment I am requesting will give my students a much broader opportunity to study Biological and Chemical reactions and responses.
This particular donation will make a huge improvement in our classroom.
Using these materials, I can now have each lab group perform an experiment and take individual data rather than watch a demonstration and take data from the demonstration. This allows much more experimentation and trial and error which fosters learning.
