My students need the trays to make their math portable to share with a friend and the whole class. The journals will capture their thinking. The centers and books will build their engagement.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I am switching grade levels and moving to a new classroom. I need first grade materials to supply my classroom with engaging, grade level appropriate materials. My students love soccer, video games, and playing at the park. I want to tap into their inherent curiousity and playfulness to start them loving math and science They are mainly the children of immigrants, if not immigrants themselves, who are challenged by poverty (95% receive free or reduced-price lunch). Over half are English Language Learners. Several qualify for Special Education support.
My Project
Many of the students I teach face the challenge of the achievement gap associated with poverty and historically disenfranchised populations. All these materials will enable the students hands-on opportunities to explore math, science and ELA. The trays and journals will allow students to share their work in math and science. The trays hold manipulatives, and journals to show their thinking can be carried around the classroom.
The science books will supplement the classroom library, and expose the students to nonfiction, scientific books.
The centers materials will provide them with playful, hands-on learning experiences. Thank you for your consideration!
