My Students

I teach first grade in the inner city of one of Chicago's most challenging neighborhoods on the south side. I am expecting to have twenty-twenty four first graders. I also teach an after school program to first and second grade girls called Sistas of STEM, and an after school program "Number Ninjas" for primary grade students. Both programs were developed by me!

Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus quarantine and social distancing, we might not be back in the classroom in September, although learning will still take place.

My Project

At the beginning of the school year the majority of my students rarely come prepared with the necessary supplies to start the school year. I foresee this being an even bigger issue this upcoming school year because of the Covid-19 epidemic and a lot of our school parents have lost their jobs.

The supplies I am requesting are essential for my students whether we are in our school building in September or continuing Remote Learning.

Students will use the supplies daily to do their assignments. The student privacy shields are really good to help students stay focused and less distracted while they are working. I have used privacy shields in the classroom for several years. The really cool thing about these ones is that they can be sterilized daily because they are made of very hard plastic. This will cut down on germs spreading and students doodling on them. The spiral notebooks, pencils, and crayons will be used to do journal writing for the first quarter of the school year. The scissors and glue will be used to do weekly STEM Design Challenges using recyclables. They will use the white boards and markers to do Math Talks, open ended math questions and practice their penmanship. My students will be doing a balance of technology/website activities as well as paper/pencil work during the upcoming school year.
