I believe the success of our students is directly affected by what we can supply in the classroom. When I think about how far behind my students are in vocabulary, reading and comprehension, I don't feel sorry for them; instead, I feel the need to take action!
My students are passionate African-American and Latino (mostly Mexican) teens with a desire to do great things in life despite their surroundings.
Even though they live in one of the toughest areas in Texas, many of them aspire to become doctors, nurses, lawyers, and more. However, one of their biggest obstacles is that they are not well read. In fact, even during their senior year, many of my students have not read a novel from cover to cover. With this in mind, one can imagine that these students lack the necessary vocabulary and skills to function at the university level. Therefore, it is encumbered upon me to ensure that I help them as much as possible to foster the betterment of both their reading and writing skills.
My students are endowed with great potential. However, as I aforementioned, they often falter on scholastic assessments (such as the PSAT and SAT) because they lack the elevated vocabulary necessary to function well beyond high school. With the aid of audio books and teaching materials, e-books, and vocabulary enhancements software from AKJ Books as well as supportive supplies such as sticky notes and a pencil sharpener from Quill, I will be able to create a classroom environment and structure that will support my students as they press forward to pursue a college education. With these resources, students will ameliorate their vocabulary, increase their reading comprehension and apply the skills they learned so they can successfully analyze texts. In the end, my students will attend college with the confidence that they are not deprived because we all cared about whether or not they are successful contributors to our society.
One of the greatest things about Donors Choose is the support you provide for teachers who could only dream about obtaining the supplies we could never afford on our own.
If you donate to this project, you are ensuring that every student I encounter has an opportunity to ameliorate their vocabulary and increase their reading comprehension. Once they know that they have the same opportunities as others who have more, they will understand that they too are valuable. Together we can support them!
