My Project

Most of my students are recent refugees and immigrants. They are eager to learn English and are determined, motivated, and possess a ton of grit! However, many of them come to school for the first time without even a backpack, much less the materials often found on classroom supply lists. All students are expected to come to school prepared, but the reality for my students' families is that there are more important things to spend their money on.

I want to give my students all the supplies they'll need to be prepared in all of their classes.

Most classrooms can provide students with loaner items, but they have to return them at the end of the period. Then they start the cycle over again in their next class, asking to borrow a pencil and piece of paper all over again. This can cause feelings of shame and embarrassment, especially when it is repeated in every class, every day.

The supplies students get from my class will be theirs to keep and use throughout the school day. They will receive composition notebooks, scissors, markers, and colored pencils. Students will not have to feel the embarrassment of asking for materials, and their teachers (and I!) will not have to stop the lesson to rummage in supply bins to get students what they need.
