This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a Title I school where most students are from lower-income, immigrant, and single-parent/grandparent households. They come from many backgrounds and speak many languages. All of my students are language delayed and qualify for special education services.
Teaching kids with disabilities requires a lot of love, patience, and enthusiasm.
Like any other child, they want to succeed but learning does not come easy for my kids. Most continue to fight on and some are ready to give up. Sometimes it’s a struggle to keep my speech students motivated and engaged. I am always looking for new opportunities to incorporate fun activities into our lessons and make my classroom a safe and inviting space for learning.

My Project
NYC public schools are currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we do not know when they will reopen. It is a stressful and unsettling time for all of us and sometimes I am just in disbelief that all of this is happening. We are learning together how to adjust to the stay, learn, and work at home situation.

Financial literacy covers many topics. My kids are lacking the background knowledge and basic skills needed to grasp the more complicated concepts. My students and their families are anxious, frustrated, worried, and are in desperate need of resources to continue learning. We want to become financially literate, but we need the materials. Before I teach about making choices, rewards, and finance, my children need to work on their basic skills. To discuss earning, saving, and spending my students need to understand the meaning of these “fancy” words.
As a speech provider, I’ve been providing teletherapy for about two weeks. These digital teaching resources will give me a variety of functional, interactive, and engaging materials to share with my students so they can continue their learning. Digital material library will allow my students to become a part of virtual educational world during this time of separation from traditional classroom instruction. “No print” parent handouts will be a critical resource for the whole family for guidance and support.
