My Students
I am excited to start this year because I have a very dynamic group of 7th graders for ELA. I know many of them well from teaching their 6th grade Social Studies class last year. The discussions that we had about history were rich with thoughtfulness and depth. They demonstrated their growing critical thinking skills when we brought in historical topics, like the factors that led to the fall of the Roman Empire, to the present day challenges we face in America.
I am excited to continue to foster their growth this year in ELA.
I anticipate great conversations about literature and a lot of amazing writing.
My Project
Each year I have students who deal with housing insecurity. Some students are able to stay with friends and family members during this time. Others stay in shelters that are sometimes far away from our school's neighborhood. As a result, students dealing with housing challenges sometimes miss school or are late. When students are experiencing these challenges outside of my classroom, I need the resources to support them as much as I can inside my classroom. For some students, my classroom is the first chance during their day to get a bandage for a cut they received the night before. Or it may be their first chance to let someone know that they are hungry because they haven't eaten breakfast. Having these first aid supplies and healthy snacks of granola bars and crackers in my classroom will help me to support my students and keep them engaged in the day's lesson, instead of having to send them outside of my classroom to meet their needs. These supplies help them to be more successful while they are at school.
Students dealing with an episode of homelessness often have challenges securing their school supplies.
They may need a new notebook or folder because theirs was misplaced during another move. They may ask for another handout that they left at a family member's house that they stayed at over the weekend. Often completing traditional homework assignments can be a challenge when staying with extended family or at a shelter. A classroom printer enables me to respond to a student's need for a replacement handout in the moment. Having notebooks and paper available for students if they've misplaced theirs removes that obstacle from their learning. Providing students with bandages, warm gloves, granola bars or an extra worksheet tells them they belong.
