Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a diverse first grade, integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.

My 24 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.

My Project

The calendar math journals are a fantastic resource to help kids understand concepts such as graphing, data, and measurement. Each day, children collect data on the weather and then make observations based on their data. We then look at the calendar for the month and discuss how time is measured (day, week, month, or year), as well as holidays and other special occasions. The best part is that each day, students then engage in daily review problems, and come up with their own equations for a given number, practice writing the date, and a spiral review of word problems, number comparisons, or shapes. My class has truly become mathematicians with the incorporation of these journals and i want next years class to benefit as well.

Plastic folders last the entire year because its durability.

We provide plastic folders for the kids who come in without supplies so that their materials, such as homework and parent communications, are safe.

Bean bag chairs provide the flexible seating that allows students to read comfortably and collaborate in small groups while eliminating other instructional issues. The comfort of the bean bag chairs will help to minimize fidgeting and distracting behaviors. The ease of moving the bean bag chairs will make forming collaborative groups quick and easy. The mobility of the bean bag chairs will also help students move away from distractions without losing their comfortable seating.
