My students are brilliant young men and women who are eager to read, work and learn. We live in an urban community, which results in hardships for many. However, my students do not let any obstacles get in their way! All of our students receive lunch at no charge because of our extremely high free/reduced lunch ratio. We are a mixed blend of all races, ethnicity and nationalities, which makes this group of students extraordinary.
My room is full of young minds that need inspiration to embrace the love of learning, math, reading, and history.
Every Monday my students write a "put aside" thought on a paper and we place it in a bag. The bag hangs above my doorway all week as a reminder to my students that no matter what they have going on at home, it stops here, at the door way. This concept has moved my students from viewing school as a "burden" to a necessity!
My Project
Having these items in the classroom will aide with all subjects! Students create their own anchor charts frequently in class to aide comprehension in topics. In reading, I present the skill or strategy for that week and use anchor charts to make collaborative notes with the students. They can then refer back to these anchor charts all year! In reading, our math concepts are written on anchor charts so if they forgot how to do a skill, it is right there for them! Students themselves get in groups and make anchor charts once the skill is 'mastered'. The students then present their anchor chart and explain their topic (typically in social studies or science). The students LOVE doing this and I want to ensure they can continue doing this!
Students learn much more when they create their own anchor charts and learn more from their peers!
Along with anchor charts, markers for the anchor charts are needed! Regular markers have dried up on us and we are frequently purchasing new ones. Anchor chart markers allow my students to make their anchor charts, share them, and recreate many times throughout the year!
As well as the basics of pencils and glue. We use pencils ALL DAY LONG! However, we have already gone through over 720 pencils this year! Students also take them home whenever they say they do not have one at home.
In addition, we use slates in ALL the time! We use slates in math to practice questions, in grammar to work on sentences, sentence types, drafting our writing, and more. We also use it for reading skills. Students read passages and will write clue words, answer response questions, or write questions on their slates. Using the slates allows us to fix our mistakes and learn from them!
