Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are English Language Learners. They come from different backgrounds and low-income families. Some of my students left their countries and came to the United States with their families looking for a better life. These students left family members and friends behind. They are trying to adapt to a new way of life.
They come from single-parent homes or live with a grandparent.
All of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. They need a lot of support to become successful in school. They take pride in accomplishing their goals.
My students are struggling with reading and need a lot of support and small group instruction. They benefit greatly from small group guided reading instruction. Some of my students are SIFE (Students With Interrupted Formal Educations). This is the first time they have attended a school setting.
My Project
The resources I am requesting will provide my students with effective ways to practice their phonics skills. As we know good decoders become effective readers. Phonics instruction can be boring, however, providing students with effective resources can make this process fun and engaging.
For many children, practicing the ability to learn sounds in words can make a big difference in how fast they learn to read.
The games requested on this project will allow my students to review phonics skills in a different and fun manner. Building students' phonemic awareness makes the difference as they transition from "Learning to Read to Reading to Learn." Therefore, it is important to make sure our young learners build a strong phonemic foundation earlier in their learning.
These resources will be utilized during guided reading, small group instruction, and independent practice. For Instance, the magnetic whiteboards and letters will be utilized to help students learn letter and sounds. The students will manipulate the letters to form words making this activity hands-on. Many of these resources can also be used during indoor recess such as the Apples to Apples, Banana Grams, and Boggle Junior games. These games can be an effective way to practice word formation and vocabulary in ELL students. The students will be having fun while learning important skills. As research indicates, making learning fun and engaging can make a big difference in student learning and motivation.
