My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.

I teach at a Title I school in Las Vegas where more than half of our students are on free or reduced lunch.

Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.

My Project

There's nothing worse than coming to school and not having the proper supplies to get through your day. Having these supplies at the ready will take away that stress from my students. One of the hidden time wasters at school is the time it takes to sharpen pencils. Getting pre-sharpened pencils saves that time and gives me students that much more of a focus on their instruction. The same thing goes for the erasers; asking around to borrow one is a huge waste of time. Grabbing a pencil-top eraser eliminates that.

Sometimes it's funny how the smallest things motivate a struggling student.

I have found that white boards are one of those motivators. If I ask a child to come to small group with a notebook it is often followed by moaning and feet dragging. This is not so when I have a set of white boards sitting at the table; the kids LOVE writing on them. They are so popular, in fact, that many of mine have gone missing and I need to reload. The same holds true of my white board markers; always a popular writing choice.

Every year I struggle to find a fun way to break the ice with my new students. When I saw the ice breaker soccer balls I knew I had to have them. They will be a fun way for me to get to know my new students next year, and to further learn about my students this year. It'll be great to be the "cool" teacher that takes the kids outside to play soccer the first week of school.
