My students need basic classroom supplies like pencils, paper and colored pencils to bring their learning to life. While Post-it notes will provide students with the opportunity to jot down their connections to texts and wonders.
Picture adorable smiling faces, a boatload of energy, and an eagerness to learn as well as to share all of their own life experiences. Then you'll know what it looks like to walk into our classroom each day. I have the great pleasure of having a very diverse population of students in our classroom, each very unique in learning style and academic capabilities.
Portland, Maine is home to a diverse culture and a wide range of socioeconomic statuses which are seen throughout the city and in each one of the classrooms.
We have a high percentage of students who receive free or reduced-price lunch. All students need to have a community that supports them, enables them to be themselves, and fosters skills and tools for successful learning.
My Project
Being able to consistently access classroom supplies is essential for the growth and development of my students. Good pencils that can be easily accessed and sharpened will greatly help students get started right away on their work. This will not only allow students to quickly problem solve the broken pencil situations but will also free me up for the sharpening duty to be able to confer more with my students. Expo markers are used in high quantities during the school year as students show their thinking on white boards during lessons. The use of white boards & expo markers keeps students actively engaged throughout the mini lessons.
Limiting some very basic barriers for my students will allow for more learning, growing and exploration to occur within our school day.
Who would have thought students REALLY NEED post-it notes? THEY DO! From the start of the year students are being asked to jot down their thinking, feelings, wonders about their learning & evidence from the text to back up their thinking. Some even use a post-it note to help mark their spot when reading or as a tool to help track while reading. Over the course of the school year these little ones will use tons of post-its in all subject areas to jot down their thinking. So with one student averaging just 2 or 3 post it notes a day that could translate to around 300 post-it notes a week for a classroom of twenty children. Who knew! Kids love post-it notes and I love to connecting this to their learning and inspiring more growth.
Your help in obtaining any of these supplies for my students would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! It would be a fantastic start to our school year.
