My Students

Each day, first graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and develop problem-solving skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and often do not have the means to provide literature, manipulatives, and other educational tools at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.

Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers.

My Project

A lot goes into setting up and creating a classroom - more than the school supply list teachers ask of parents. In addition to the traditional pencils and crayons, a first grade teacher uses chart paper and markers on a daily basis to create visual aids for all students to learn. We use cardstock to create phonics books that students use for independent work. Labels and folders will help organize individual materials at their desks.

While those items are needed, too, we simply can't ask parents to provide everything we need, especially things like chart paper!

These items will help alleviate the pressure on me as a teacher to supplement my classroom resources. Moreover, they will help set this school year up for success!
