it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach approximately 115 orchestra students in grades 4-6. My students are creative, energetic, and inspiring. They are passionate about creating and performing music. Many of them share that orchestra is their favorite part of the school day. I often have to gently nudge them out the door when class is over, as they exclaim that they want to stay and have orchestra class all day!
The materials in this project will help my students to improve in the areas of musical literacy, fingerboard geography, and bow technique.
We will use the whiteboards, vinyl tape, markers, and erasers to practice reading and writing notes on a musical staff. The Crayola markers will help us to color code our music and aid visual learners. We have also started an orchestra karate system to motivate students to improve their note reading skills. Students will hook the shower curtain rings onto their instruments and add beads to them each time they pass another level of a note reading challenge. Learning to use our bows will be much more exciting with the use of visual aids such as monkey erasers that will grip onto our bows to help us practice bow distribution. We will stick the straws and paint rollers through the instruments' sound holes to help us learn to draw a straight bow. Finally, we will use the paint stirrers to create fingerboard guides, which we will use when practicing correct finger placement on the strings. With your support, my students will have a variety of visual and tactile learning manipulatives that will allow them to improve their musicianship!
