Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The overall demographic of students I teach includes hard-working, fun, and in need of love kids while at the same time encountering tough home life situations. Many of my students live with a single parent, relatives, or foster families. The neighborhood is close knit, while at the same time, populated with gangs, drugs, and crime. School is our students’ safe place and I try to make my classroom their home. One unique thing about my classroom this year is that I just switched from teaching 3rd grade to middle school, which means this is the second time I have had these students!
My students remember our third grade classroom and have asked for specifics by name that made them feel comfortable and excited to learn.
The fact that they have very specific memories of our classroom makes me feel like I may have made even the slightest impact on them and would like to continue to do so in their middle school years. Knowing that they enjoyed and remembered our classroom is a great feeling and one I'd like to duplicate.
My Project
Teachers are always in need of supplies...always! It is hard to believe this year is coming to an end, but it is approaching quickly! As I am adjusting to middle schoolers, I have recognized a few items that will make next year run a little smoother. I already have a few large items to use for flexible seating, but the busy bands will give a few more discrete options for students to try. Flexible seating allows those students with a little more energy to pick a spot that will allow them to focus and stay on task. Just the ability to "kick" the busy band and move their feet may help them stay focused on the task at hand. The planner and pens will help me to stay organized with the different periods throughout the day and combining that with the giant calendar will help my students stay more organized. It will also allow them to be more responsible for their learning and provide a visual of what the class day, week, and month look like. With 32 students in a class period, the hall passes will help me keep track of where my students are off to as well as allow others in the hall who see them know where they are supposed to be headed. Overall, this project will help the classroom run smoother by providing the materials we need to stay organized and focused.
