This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are very vibrant young souls that are excited about learning and want to absorb as much new knowledge and skills as possible. With little to no educational support at home, my students enjoy learning in an engaging environment that feels welcoming and where they can be comfortable.
For some of the students, the only schooling their young minds receive is during the few hours that I have with them each day.
I want to be able to set a strong foundation for future learning in my students, but can sometimes be difficult with my classroom being very limited in the resources that are available.
Many of my students were highly affected by Hurricane Harvey, yet they still manage to come to school eager and ready to learn every day. Due to Hurricane Harvey, some of my students are displaced and are living in foster care, packed shelters, with other relatives or being raised by their grandparents. Some students are living in households where the parents are young parents who are high school dropouts.
My Project
My students need supplies and tools for the classroom that will help assist them in their daily learning. These supplies will be used in individual work, small group work, and whole group work. Students will use the Phonemic Awareness learning and Mathematics learning centers to help build their basic reading and math skills. The use of whiteboards will provide an easy place for them to show and share their work during whole class activities or in small groups. The whiteboards will also go well with the lapboard supply center to allow students to have all the supplies that they need in one area while practicing word study.
The wobble cushions will provide my students with a comfortable and welcoming work environment and have a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them.
This helps the students to communicate and engage in critical thinking.
To aid in daily organization and student work, the turn in shelves and space saver will teach my students how to be organized and pay attention to key details that will help the daily transitions in the classroom run smoother.
