The variety of students I teach ranges across a huge spectrum. I work in a school that has about 40% bilingual or ESL learners. I have the privilege of being challenged to work with students who know English as their second language, inclusion learners, rough home lives, average students, and students that exceed ability. Having a successful learning experience for a whole group means using multiple measures of instruction including art, technology, videos, manipulatives, and projects.
These kids are great, and every day I try to find ways to excite their learning and get them engaged.
The students in my classroom are always willing to assist, help, and discuss their findings as a group.
My Project
I am asking for a small donation of basic school supplies for student growth. Many students lack the opportunity to shine or focus because they can't afford the recourses that other families can. The idea I have is to keep a small container with school supplies in each desk. This container will be shared between multiple classes ensuring that each student has the same recourses to succeed as the next student sitting next to them.
I have seen first hand when you supply a child with the tools to succeed most of the time they will.
I have also seen children not get involved because they don't want to ask a friend to borrow a pencil or some markers to make their project stand out. Most students aren't unprepared for class, they just don't have school supplies. I think by having containers in each desk with basic school supplies students will feel okay to take it out and use the highlighter to make vocabulary stand out.
Mastering mathematics is like any other subject. Students have to take notes, highlight key points, and get creative if they really want to get a deep understanding. Student success is all about the recourses they are provided with and having a teacher there to encourage them. I want all my students to succeed, and all of them to have the same opportunity as the child sitting next to them.
