Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school, located in Chicago's north side, has a 92% Hispanic population. A whopping 95% of our students are considered low-income. Despite this, they come to school with smiles on their faces, eager to learn something new.
My kindergarten students deserve the opportunity to receive the best education they can get in order to thrive throughout their lives.
While our school provides as much as it possibly can in order to ensure that students are successful, our district budget often limits what schools can provide.
My Project
My students' parents work hard to get them what they need, but little by little the costs of basic school supplies start adding up. Factor in the fact that some families have multiple children in school and that can turn back to school shopping into a dreadful experience. Furthermore, some families simply do not have the resources to buy their children more than one of what they need, even though there are supplies that need to be replenished several times a year. Trying to make supplies that parents bring in (or that we provide our students with) last an entire school year is another challenge, as students go through pencils, crayons, glue, and erasers like water.
I want to send my students off to first grade knowing that they are well-prepared academically, but having adequate supplies also plays a big role in how they will perform on a day-to-day basis.
I want to help ease some of the financial burden my students' parents feel by providing each student with a ream of paper, Post-It pads, erasers, composition notebooks, and colored pencils. Having these supplies would be a tremendous help for my students and their families!
