The students at North High School are extraordinary and resilient. At North, we describe our students as Courageous, Passionate, Relentless. It couldn't be more obvious with the strides they make in their education even given their reality outside of our school doors. Almost 100 percent of our 1,350 students qualify for free-and-reduced lunch; we serve one of the poorest communities in Iowa.
No matter what the students face outside of North, they know they will have the tools at school no matter what measures teachers have to go through to get the supplies and opportunities.
It's tough though because the kids need everything - pencils, lined paper, tools to manipulate, white boards, markers, note cards, folders, printer paper, etc. One teacher can't provide that and funding isn't always there.
The community is supportive as best they can. Many of our students take care of younger siblings, work part-time to full-time jobs outside of school to help with family bills, and are a part of many sports and activities where they find themselves happiest. North tries to be the bright spot in their daily routine. We want to show them with the right tools and education they can do anything.
My Project
North became a demonstration school last year and we have implemented strategies to have them discover learning more from each other and less help from teachers feeding answers. With these folders with page protectors for sheets to track their learning on standards they need to master will allow them to see where they are and how much they need to grow.
The red, yellow, and green cups are indicators to the teacher how well the students are understanding concepts during group work, so teachers don't interrupt good, student-led learning and only intervene when a red cup ("Stop, I need help" cup) is shown.
Our students are mastering this newer way of learning and are having success. Having these supplies will allow students to work independently, in a group, and have easy access to teacher help with simple tools.
There's always a plan to these supplies and some are simply that they need them to learn such as pencils and erasers. Having these will make a difference in each student's life and allow them to learn at their own pace with each other.
