My Project

Students spend so much time immersed in screens and not so much time immersed in books. As an elementary school librarian, it is my job to help all students fall in love with reading. One way to do this is to make reading exciting! My students love coming to the media center because they always know they are getting more than just a read aloud and a book to take home. After each story, I often have a small fun activity for them to complete, which they enjoy.

Incorporating STEM activities that relate to the week's book is a great way to provide opportunities to explore collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.

The library is much more than a place to just get books. The materials requested in this project are all part of a year-long Storybook STEM program that incorporates hands-on activities to engage in upon completion of the weekly read-aloud. For example, after reading The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires, students will be given a variety of objects, such as Legos, pipe cleaners, cups, dominoes, rubber bands, and more to see what amazing creation they can come up with!
