About My Students

Kenya is such a mother hen and wants to take care of everyone. She does a great job participating in our functional skills or life skills curriculum. She wants to learn as much as she can about taking care of herself, cleaning, cooking, and taking care of other people.

Kenya developed the idea of this project all on her own. She thought we needed more things in our room to use when working on our hygiene, cleaning, or cooking skills. She chose items on Amazon for the project that she felt our classroom would benefit from. We do have limited supplies and she chose some great items for us to utilize when learning to take care of bodily hygiene in a room without a shower, items for cleaning, and items for cooking and baking.

My students all have a moderate to severe intellectual disability. Their future isn't career or college based. Their future is life skills and independent living skills based. We work daily on academics, career skills, and independent living/life skills. The most important topic is their independence and ability to care for themselves. We will learn academic skills, like measurement, when working with measuring out laundry detergent and while cooking/baking. The students will also work on life skills and real-life problem-solving as we venture into cleaning, cooking, baking, and self-care.

In Their Own Words

I want our class to have new supplies. We don't have a lot of things we need to work on hygiene, cleaning, and cooking skills. I want to have things we can use and learn life skills with.

I will help my teacher develop a schedule for our functional skills. We will also have routines for things like brushing our teeth and applying deodorant daily. I think it would be good to create a schedule for sweeping, mopping, and cooking, and for everyone to have a job for the day or week.

This project is important to me because we will be able to work on things that we need to learn how to do. I want to live on my own someday and want to know how to be as independent as I can be.
