This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a city that is thriving, but they don't always feel that they are part of that success or able to access it. What they know is that they live in a neighborhood that is changing due to development and gentrification and that other parts of the city celebrate these changes while not acknowledging the impact it has on our students' lives. Too often, these changes are pushing their friends and families out because of rising rent and home prices instead of giving them access to services and opportunities they were long denied.

My students live in a city of opportunity but are denied many of those opportunities everyday.

My job is to make sure that they have the same opportunities in my classroom that students in West Austin have. I work hard to teach them not only academics, but the importance of self-advocacy and determination.

My Project

Eastside Early College High School just moved to a new campus. We were given an extremely limited budget for our move and many of our supplies and materials had to be left behind, were damaged in shipment, or are 20+ years old. Our campus is in disarray and still under construction and our admin team is amazing but focused on things like electricity, plumbing, paper towels, etc.

I teach special education science and the majority of our students are from economically disadvantaged households, refugee communities, and communities from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

We would LOVE to give our students the experience of a high school education equal to that of the best high schools in our area. We simply do not have the budget to do so. Please support us. Eastside students deserve microscopes too. They deserve fish tanks. They deserve telescopes. They deserve to have markers in their classroom, colored pencils, a printer. They deserve the tools to make a garden.
