This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a city that is thriving, but they don't always feel that they are part of that success or able to access it. What they know is that they live in a neighborhood that is changing due to development and gentrification and that other parts of the city celebrate these changes while not acknowledging the impact it has on our students' lives. Too often, these changes are pushing their friends and families out because of rising rent and home prices instead of giving them access to services and opportunities they were long denied.

My students live in a city of opportunity but are denied many of those opportunities everyday.

My job is to make sure that they have the same opportunities in my classroom that students in West Austin have. I work hard to teach them not only academics, but the importance of self-advocacy and determination.

My Project

As we prepare to teach our students virtually, our special education life skills students face an even greater barrier than most. Because of a variety of disabilities, many of these students are unable to use laptops, online educational websites, or video conferencing software. Compounding this, the great majority of our students come from economically disadvantaged families who are unable to purchase school supplies for learning at home.

During this time of virtual education, our neediest students risk falling even further behind.

To prevent this, we need assistance purchasing additional supplies to send home such as manipulatives and specialized tools and materials.

We will use materials such as beads and pipe cleaners to teach our kids basic arithmetic and hourglasses to teach time management. Because our students have a variety of disabilities, the pencils, crayons, and markers will be used to build customized packages that match each child's needs. The laminating machine and paper will let students respond through words and drawings that they can hold up to their screens on reusable paper and worksheets.

Please help us give our neediest students the materials they lack so that they can receive the education that all children deserve.
