Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"What do you want in your dream school?" my colleague challenged her second graders to imagine in a writing activity. Your dream school! Anything you want! Faced with this glorious possibility, students discussed among themselves, debated and weighed their options, and began to put their most precious thoughts to paper.

One student wrote, "I dream of a school with more pencils."

A prompt that might inspire quite different longings in other educational contexts reveals that our second graders know what our classrooms need to be a safe and productive space for our diverse student body, and know what we lack. 100% of our Title I East Boston school's students qualify for free lunch, and my students, the vast majority who are bilingual Spanish-English learners, have overcome endless obstacles with their families to be where they are today.

My students are bursting with kindness and potential energy, ready to take on second grade and the new school year as the days tick ever closer, but first, they need school supplies they can depend on!

My Project

Basic school supplies for student use and teacher grouping are essential for creating a safe and welcoming classroom environment where second graders feel secure to take risks and try new things. Creating systems of organization with something as simple as color-coded folders and categorized classroom supplies can create a tremendous difference in allowing students to spend their time and energy focusing on exploring and learning, instead of worrying about adapting to new systems or available pencils or markers.

Reliable school supplies and organization systems are crucial for alleviating second grade anxiety and facilitating student success!

These materials will give students the tools they need to concretely express their learning, and provide the necessary supports for the more invisible scaffolding of clear expectations and the creation of a classroom culture that is safe and dependable.
