My Students

I have a classroom with several aspiring novelists. These students are looking for support outside of classroom assignments to get inspired about novel writing.

I teach a diverse group of ninth grade students in an urban classroom.

They love a challenge and they love literature. Many students have expressed interest not only in reading high quality novels but also writing their own! After being inspired by tests like Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, many are interested in taking all they've learned about narrative and applying it to novels and other texts of their own creation.

My Project

I am requesting one copy of The 90-Day Novel, one copy of Charles Dickens, fifteen stretched canvases, a package pkg of acrylic paints, a stencil lettering kit, and a bottle of gold paint. I would like to develop an extracurricular club for students who are interested in writing a novel. The club would act as a writing workshop--we would meet weekly and bring our progress to discuss, share, revise, etc. The text for writing a novel in 90 days will act as a road map for the club. We will also study and discuss the writing practices of noted novelists, including Charles Dickens in addition to many modern novelists. The art supplies requested will be used for writing inspiration activities in addition to potential club promotion and advertising within the school. These tools will give students the needed skills and engagement to create some excellent original fiction.

This project will improve my classroom by supporting the writing that students are already doing in English classes and beyond, but will also provide the materials to create a powerful "writing workshop" environment.

Writing a novel is a huge undertaking for a high school student, so creating an atmosphere of support and excitement around the process will be key to student success.
