This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
If you've gone to any store lately you may have seen the "Back to School" signs and displays. Each one is full of students with their supply lists excitedly picking folders and notebooks of their favorite color and picture.
My students attend school in a low income neighborhood where they do not have access to as many educational resources and materials as their neighboring Manhattan schools.
99% of our families are entitled to receive free and reduced price lunches due to their level of income. As a result of their income, back to school shopping isn't quite the same. Often, we have a large number of students who are never even given supplies. Despite these obstacles standing in the way of their success, our students continuously strive to be better students and spend a great portion of their lives attending school, after-school, and Saturday school.
My Project
While it may be routine to send home a supply list and expect a bag full of goodies a few days later, it isn't always a realistic expectation.
With these supplies our students will not only be prepared in the most simplistic of ways but they will also be ready with some of the most productive supplies they could get.
The graph paper and composition notebooks are an extremely powerful tool to have when learning mathematics. Using the grids to create mathematical models and accurately and precisely compute, our students will be supported in their journey to becoming mathematicians. Moreover, the folders will help to bridge a home school connection as we can easily send home important notices, letters, and homework.
Back to school was always a favorite time of year for many. With these supplies, hopefully these students will feel the same joy!
