Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love reading: being read to, reading to each other, or reading by themselves. They devour books ravenously, and are always excited and engaged during their independent reading time. In fact, they are such voracious readers that it's hard to have enough books for them!
Reading time at school is critical for my students.
Many of my students live in poverty; their loving families cannot provide large home libraries, and the public library's hours are inconvenient for parents working multiple jobs to make ends meet. Over half of my students do not speak English at home; school is the only place where they can practice and get support with English language literacy.
My Project
I am requesting a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction leveled books. These books will support a wide range of readers, from students who are just learning to read to those who are ready for early chapter books. These books are engaging, time-tested classics I know my students will love.
I am requesting two copies of each title, so that students can read these books both independently and with a partner, thereby refining critical comprehension and language skills as they "book talk" together. We will also use these books as models during Writers Workshop, as students use the books they love, to develop their own skills as authors.
Your support will provide years of reading pleasure in my classroom.
Children will learn from and with these books and be able to look forward to new, exciting titles as their skills progress. Please consider supporting my students as they become lifelong readers.
