Help me give my students the tools to be as creative as possible with their reading and writing journals! New notebooks, colored pencils, and section tabs all motivate even the most reluctant student!
Sixth graders LOVE to learn! The conversations we have are so enriching and energizing! We sit for long periods of time exploring various pieces of literature together. My past students reflect on that time as being some of their favorite time as a sixth-grader.
As part of their two-hour literacy blocks, my students become avid readers and writers.
They walk into class each and every day eager to see what’s on the agenda. They have extended periods of time to simply read and write about their reading as well as have small group discussions about their books. They make predictions, analyze character development, relate their text to social influences and injustices, and look carefully at the varying themes that weave their way throughout their ever-advancing texts.
As a sixth grade teacher, I don’t teach my students HOW to read; rather, I teach them to LOVE to read.
My Project
When presented with the option of using an iPad or a notebook for reading responses and story writing, my sixth graders choose notebooks! I find this very refreshing as technology use is fast becoming the norm.
When I am able to provide students with new notebooks, colored pencils (because what sixth grader only wants one color!) and section tabs, the motivation for writing and creating increases significantly!
Students enjoy adding emphasis with color use, marking areas they need to return to for a re-write, leaving encouraging comments to a peer or drawing diagrams to add detail to their visualization of the story.
I am all about creating a product one can be proud of! These materials will do just that for my sixth graders!
