My Students

My students are the most caring, unique, and energetic students you will meet. All of my students are diagnosed with different disabilities, and many of them are English Language Learners (ELL) as well. They come from low-income families and receive free school breakfast and lunch. Despite all this, they are filled with curiosity and are always eager to learn. The students in my class love to engage in fun activities, especially those that are hands-on.

My Project

Many of my students are struggling readers, therefore they are discouraged to read. I would like to provide my students with high-interest books on their reading levels, and graphic novels are currently their craze!

Reading graphic novels are an excellent way for children to learn and practice the foundational skills they need such as: being able to read visuals, decoding words with patterns, reading sight words, sequencing, and following a story structure (setting, characters, problem, solution).

Being that my students have disabilities, and many of them are ELLs as well, they rely heavily on the pictures to understand what's going on. With the leveled comic books I am requesting, my students will be able to read, match the words to the pictures, comprehend, and actually enjoy the story. These high-interest graphic novels will also help my students form great reading habits and will motivate them to strive for the higher reading levels.

Students can also bring these books home and share with their families, hopefully engaging everyone in meaningful discussions and building a better reading life for all.
