As part of a unit on body systems and nutrition, I want to teach my students to think more critically about what they put into their bodies. They will be learning about how the body uses carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. They will collect data and analyze their own eating habits. Finally, they will collect data about and analyze the nutritional content of the fast foods they eat. I hope to empower my students to make better choices in the interest of their health. The best way to get my students interested and excited about this science topic is to make it relevant to their lives -- that is where the documentary Supersize Me will help. My middle-school students are consumers of junk food and fast food. I want them to think critically about how they companies market to them and about how they can choose to spend their money. My students are almost all low-income and they live in a neighborhood with very few healthy food options. Watching and discussing Supersize Me will immediately grab my students' attention and interest, and it will be a springboard for learning about how fast food affects their bodies. This film will also offer a way to discuss the differences between fact and opinion, and a way to identify and discuss bias. After this unit, my students will be able to make better choices about what they eat. They will now be able to make informed decisions about where and how they spend their money. In short, they will be healthier and smarter consumers.
