Help me give my students high interest, grade appropriate reading materials, for our classroom library, that will engage them in a variety of topics that promote learning.
Our elementary school is located in the city of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The school serves a diverse population of students ranging from Kindergarten through Grade Five.
My students are a very special group of creative, talented, intelligent, fifth graders.
Students work well individually, as well as with their peers in small group settings, and many will evaluate one another's work in a positive and constructive manner. A love for learning is evident in our classrooms. Students want to please their teachers and work hard to achieve high classroom social and academic expectations.
My Project
These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. Students need exposure to a variety of genres and will easily engage in reading nonfiction materials when presented with interesting and engaging selections. Current fictional text and/or graphic novels are an ongoing need to update our classroom library, as well as the nonfiction selections.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of high interest materials that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.
The best way to increase reading ability is to practice, practice, practice. These books will provide opportunities to practice necessary skills while students simultaneously grow into stronger and more independent readers. Students will utilize the books in many ways such as for pure reading enjoyment, for classroom book report projects, as a way to earn points for our school's accelerated reader program and/or for a reference or resource to our class lessons. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with a variety of genres.
