Mrs. Lark from Miami FL is requesting reading nooks, desks & storage through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need sturdy desks and chairs in order to complete their Reading, Writing, Math, and Science assignments.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 99% of our students receiving reduced or free lunch. This is a Title 1 diverse school in Miami. Last year, September Hurricane Irma devastated our area and the school closed for about ten days. A vast number of languages including English, Spanish, Creole, Hindi, Portuguese, French, and Mandarin. Our students are economically and culturally diverse. They are active, creative and eager to learn. A majority of the students are from single-parent homes. They are starving for a chance to excel at something and be recognized. These desks will enhance and beautify our classroom. It is my hope that the resources and materials from Donors will fuel the students and give them a jump start in Literacy. Reading, Math, and Science. are core subjects in Elementary School and the students will not excel if they cannot read.
My students are Superheros and they need desks and chairs. Can classroom furniture really lead to learning gains? The quick answer is no - new furnishings will not affect student achievement. But when coupled with the proper technology and - most importantly - a change in pedagogy, data shows very clearly that active-learning classrooms have measurable impacts on academic performance. The desks are very old and outdated. The screws are constantly falling out and it has become a hazard in the classroom. The students are constantly complaining that their desk is shaky and legs are loose. The custodian has repaired these same desks on a continuous basis and the screws still come out. Dilapidated classrooms furniture, inadequate desks have become a source of worry to most teachers and parents in many school districts, especially those with minority demographics. Students in both primary and secondary schools are affected by outdated and broken furniture that has a major impact on the quality of teaching and learning. Our school budget was cut at the beginning of this school year and we lost teachers and support staff. This Title 1 school does not have funding for classroom essentials. Without the help of generous donors, we can not afford even the most basic supplies. Please help me to get my students the desks and chairs to ensure academic progress in a safe classroom environment to improve students' learning and their school lives.
