"I want to be a scientist when I grow up", is what one of my 1st grade students told me yesterday. With a strong emphasis on teaching reading & math, science has taken a back seat. I'd like to be able to help my 1st grade student continue to be excited about science by providing hands on materials.
I am the proud teacher of twenty darling first grade students.
My students are eager and excited to learn. This year I am faced with the challenge of teaching many students who have a hard time focusing and learning with only paper and pencil assignments and direct teaching. These students rely on using tactile, hands-on activities to help them learn. My students love learning about science!
My Project
I am a teacher who has seen the state core change many times over the years. With the changing of the core in the past, the emphasis has been on teaching reading & math, with science being somewhat ignored. This year, my state has adopted the common core which has added MANY topics in the area of science. How exciting!!! After looking over the new core in the area of science, I realized I have a VERY limited supply of materials to teach the new topics I am now required to teach. I am excited for the challenge of teaching my students about animal characteristics and classification, rocks, soil, plants, water, weather, as well as a few others. I know in my heart, that with the materials I am requesting, I will be able to be the science teacher I would like to be. I will be able to teach my first grade students about the science topics in a way that will help cement the concepts in their minds. I will be able to teach my students with hands-on activities and learning games.
I am very invested in my students and in their learning.
I am a teacher that wants them to learn EVERYTHING they need to learn in first grade. With your generous donation, I will be able to teach my students about science in a fun and exciting, hands-on way. I will be able to watch my students actively engaged in learning many science topics, such as rocks and animal habitats. I will be able to teach my students, so that the topics are not forgotten in a few days, but cemented in their minds.
