Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third grade students are enthusiastic, motivated, diverse learners who work extra hard for every gain that they make. My students are with me in a separate, self-contained classroom setting for reading and math. These students are emerging readers and mathematicians who take pride in each new word or new fact that they learn! In my classroom, we celebrate everyone's accomplishments, however large or small.

The students lend words of encouragement and praise to each other without my prompting.

They are truly rooting for each other's success! Most of my students come from low-income backgrounds where it is difficult to find resources for "extras" like supplies and materials.

My Project

The materials and supplies that I am requesting are essential to my students' academic success. Unfortunately, due to economic hardship, most of my students do not come to school with the supplies that they need. All of my students are diverse learners who struggle in their learning. Many have difficulty with focus and remaining on task. For this reason, supplies are very important motivators. Colored paper is used to create interest. My students love to use mechanical pencils because they feel like it is a pen, a big deal in third grade! We use glue sticks throughout the day to support hands-on instruction with reading projects or math journals. Many of my students are still emerging readers who use drawing (with markers and colored pencils!) to visualize their thoughts and ideas.

Hands-on learning stimulates curiosity, improves social interactions, expands creativity, and boosts confidence in my students.

Without materials to facilitate this, these types of learning activities are difficult to plan and implement. My students get so excited when they know that they can create something on their own. They love to present their learning to the rest of the class too! All of this gives confidence to kids that really struggle.
