My Students

Welcome to my Science Lab! I have the privilege of teaching 5th and 6th-grade students Science every day! My students attend an inner-city school and are provided with free breakfast and lunch daily. As an inter-district school, we have a population of 70% urban students and 30% suburban.

Hands-on, minds-on is what we live by.

When someone asks me, "What do you do all day?" My usual response is, "Play! I get to play with stuff all day!"

My students explore the sun, Earth, and moon using lights and globes. We've even been known to perform mini-soap operas (As the Earth Turns). We construct mazes using mirrors, investigate sound waves using Slinkys, and mix colors of light. We explore chemical reactions by mixing substances. We build atoms with clay and pipe cleaners, light cheese balls on fire to study food energy, and take virtual field trips to places such as Mono Lake to study ecosystems. We love all things science!

My Project

Every year, we expect our 5th and 6th-grade students to create amazing Science Fair and Invention Convention projects with little to no supplies. 5th graders spend weeks designing, conducting, and recording data on an experiment of their choice. The 6th graders work on creating a new invention. They use the Engineering Process: ask, imagine, plan, create, improve, and communicate! They design their own products and build them all by themselves!

We showcase the students' hard work at our annual Science Fair and Invention Convention.

Every project is accompanied by a tri-fold board that explains and emphasizes the highlights of their project and what the students have learned. Parents, students, teachers, and judges walk around and view the showcase.

In previous years, we've had to beg and borrow for supplies to make creative, colorful boards. I am asking for boards and art supplies so the students can make boards that they can be proud of. The boards are expensive and stores sell out quickly. Duct tape will help make the boards colorful! Stickers and letters will make the boards "pop!" The cutter makes cutting quick and easy. Markers will allow the kids to draw and label all pictures and photos.
