Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a culturally diverse Title One school where ninety-five percent of the students are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Many of them have struggled academically. Most are English Language Learners who are learning to speak English alongside their academic learning. Even getting to school can be a challenge with early pickups and long bus rides required to get to school on time. My students work hard everyday to overcome the challenges that they face. This is especially true since the Sonoma fires ripped through our community in October of 2017. We are still feeling the impact of the fires that changed our community. This especially true recently as my students have been emotionally impacted by the smoke from the recent Northern California fires.
My students come to school actively excited everyday; they love to learn and explore.
They are avid readers who are constantly pushing themselves to read more. I often have to ask them to put their books away when we are working on other things as they keep sneaking them out to read more. When independent reading time ends there is almost always groans and requests for more time to read.
My Project
My students read, a lot. An average of more than five books each through the first half of the year. We read daily and a part of our classroom culture is sharing the books we read with each other. My students share what they are reading with each other constantly. We regularly do book talks where they share their favorite books with the whole class. We don't currently have a good space to display our recommended books.
Please help us get a revolving book stand to display our recommended books.
This book stand will give us an excellent space for students to share their book recommendations. It will allow us to showcase their favorite books and help each student expand their list of must read books encouraging even more reading.
