Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a seventh-year special education teacher at a Title I high school in New Mexico. I have a wonderful group of students who I have the privilege to teach. They are clever, fun, hard-working, and ready to learn. I am new to the school that I am working at and am starting a new autism program from the ground up, with limited funds. The students that I teach need a lot of support learning daily living skills, vocational skills and social skills. This year I teach students on the autism spectrum life skills, vocational skills, occupational skills, math and literacy.
I want to provide my students with the quality education they deserve, but I have limited funds to do this.
I supply most school supplies because my students are from high poverty/low-income households. I order a lot of materials with my own money, just so I have something relevant to teach.
My Project
There are a lot of times when my students come to school hungry. I have noticed that when they have a snack, they are able to focus more on their learning and are more engaged in their educational experience. Snacks often provide students with the "pick me up" that they might need in order to participate in class.
Having snacks for students who need them often reinforces positive behavior and can help students who struggle to remain focused in class.
I teach students with autism who have a lot of sensory needs. I notice that food is a huge motivator for my students and can help reinforce positive behavior as well help students calm down when they are getting escalated or over whelmed. When students have food in their bellies they are able to focus more on their education in the classroom.
More than half of students from low‑income households
