Super Slaying Our Reading Goals Through Manga and Diverse Texts

Imagine the smell of warm pastries and the sound of relaxing guitar strums filling the room while you drink your favorite hot beverage. What book do you have in your hand?
Unfortunately, some students don't have positive associations when it comes to reading.
I'm hoping to change that with "Café Fridays," where students can curl up with a new book that personally interests them during our 20 minutes of choice reading time. I am requesting Dragon Ball Z and other texts aligned with their interests to build our classroom library! I've overheard so many student conversations about anime and manga, and seen several Chromebook screens that had Goku as its background. With these new additions to our library, I can't wait to see their faces light up when they notice that their passions are important in our classroom and in our learning.
Countless studies have shown that 20 minutes of reading a day can improve foundational literacy skills and mental health. Let's make this short time memorable for kids as it is paired with diverse, highly engaging text (and pastries!)
