My Students

My students are K.I.D.S. They are knowledgeable, inquisitive, determined and successful. The school they attend serves a low-income area. For many students, the school sometimes is the most consistent part of their day. Unfortunately, in the last five years that hasn’t been very consistent. New teachers make up between 61-76 percent of the staff each year. This is changing now but the students have accelerated at having positive attitudes towards the school. There is great pride in my students. We have a 95% attendance rate and very low mobility. My school is located in a rural area.

We are the hidden gems of the school district.

The students in my class are thirsty for knowledge. They come to school ready to learn. Eighty percent of the students in the class began our adventure into second grade far below grade level. This hasn’t stopped them from wanting to learn. In fact, it has fueled them. They have big goals, ideas, and hearts.

My Project

School can be frustrating for a student struggling to master reading. All students need a chance to be successful. That is why the class requested sight word resources that can be used with the teacher, with a partner, or independently.

Students need new ways to practice sight words.

The SnapWords Teaching Cards will help students master sight words by providing a picture and a motion the students can associate with the word. Students will learn the word at the teacher table. They will then be able to use the cards to practice independently or with a partner.

The Sight-Words Talking Board will be used for the student to use during workstation time. It allows students to check if they say a word correctly. It’s the perfect independent practice resource. Struggling readers can gain confidence in working on words without relying on the help of someone else.

The requested resources, SnapWords Teaching Cards and Sight-Word Talking Board, will help students master sight words to help increase reading fluency and confidence.
