My students need 10 science magazines to improve literacy in science!
We also need 4 more binders and 1 pack of sheet protectors to make science specific glossaries.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach some of the most resilient, self-advocating students in Houston. Our students come to school every day wanting to increase their abilities in Math, Science, English, and Social Studies. It is my absolute pleasure to get to include ALL of these subjects in Science, as we love to push ourselves to include all of our subjects. Our students have shown so much growth in reading, and I want to do my part to help by increasing their opportunities to practice reading, writing, and speaking so that we can have more fluent readers in 7th grade.
This year, I am pushing myself and my students to become better scientists by writing detailed explanations of natural phenomena, reading real world examples of natures oddities, and increasing our academic language and vocabulary in the classroom.
My Project
My students LOVE reading and powering through even the most difficult of passages in Science. On most days, we have to break down our complex science readings to simpler language so that our lower readers can understand the material being read.
New materials like magazines, building color picture-friendly glossaries, and incorporating labs with high levels of academic language, can improve not only our knowledge and skills as scientists, but also as readers of the world.
These materials can help bridge the gaps in language barriers or academic barriers so that our Giants can be the successful, literate future of tomorrow.
