Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to learn. Their loving families send them to school every day ready to collaborate, make mistakes, have fun, and work hard. Most of the students at our school qualify for the free lunch program, so their families cannot support the school financially.
I want to provide my students with meaningful, hands-on learning.
Since many students are English Language Learners, they must both master academic content and a new language. This means it is critical that every moment of the day supports deep conversations and academic language as well as content standards.
My Project
I am asking for a variety of hands-on learning kits that will engage my young learners in the iterative design process. As they think, plan, make, and refine their projects, they will develop the habits of mind - resiliency, adaptability, collaboration - they need to succeed in school, at home and work, and in our community.
These STEM kits naturally encourage learning across the content areas.
The fairy tale kits challenge students to apply their understanding of basic design concepts to stories and characters they love. This is a natural way for children to develop the language they need while enriching their reading skills. The coding games, chain reaction kit, and logic puzzles require not just hands-on work, but lots of rich cooperation and discussion. So while students engineer, they also develop rich academic language. A set of STEM notebooks will allow them to practice their growing writing skills too - while also providing a place to keep their ideas organized and a way to reflect on their progress.
All of these materials will support my students in becoming creative thinkers who collaborate with ease and develop novel solutions to problems they encounter. These early STEM experiences will support their learning for years to come.
