My Students

It took Thomas Edison over 1,000 tries to create the light bulb, and where would we be if he had given up after the first few times?

This is my third year teaching at an inner-city charter school in Southern California.

My school serves African and Mexican Americans in an economically challenged area. More than half of my class is learning English as a second language. I am the Science teacher for 75 amazing second graders! My students will be eager and ready to learn new concepts about rocks, Earth, force and motion, and magnets. Imagine if we could bring real tools for students to become scientist and test out their own theories?

My Project

My class is need of science to books to research topics such as force and motion and magnets. As well as tools such as magnets and activity labs to conduct their own experiments. The goal is to increase confidence to take chances and test out student generated experiments, a skill that cannot be learned simply by reading books. I could simply tell my students how magnets work, but why do that when they could have their own magnets and discover their own answers.

I firmly believe that it is important to give back power to students over their learning.
