My project needs non-fiction resources for learning more about animal habitats, geology, landforms, sound, and motion including 20 copies of 2 Magic School Bus chapter books.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 3rd grade in an inner-city, Title-I school in South Carolina. Last year was my first year teaching and my favorite subject to teach was science. One problem I had though, was that my students were often lacking the background knowledge needed to make sense of many of the science topics we covered. They had not been exposed to different landforms, rocks, plants and animals and this made teaching these ideas very difficult. In addition, our textbook was not aligned with our standards nor was the information presented in a logical manner so this resource was next to useless. As a result, I spent countless hours at the public library trying to create text sets so that my students could see color pictures and read about what we were studying in class in order to have the knowledge base necessary to learn. I really feel, that if my students can have these books on hand it will allow them to read and learn about these science topics all year long. They'll be able to see pictures of things they may be unexposed to and read fun facts about the topics we're studying which will help them to make sense of what they're learning and see its application in the real world. In addition, I feel that using the Magic School Bus chapter books would greatly benefit them as well because they could learn about what we are studying in science while also working on their reading skills in a fun and interesting format. Providing my class with these books will help them to better grasp the science concepts that we study while helping them to improve both their fiction and non-fiction reading skills.
