My Students

Because of the coronavirus, our students are currently learning from home. We were given limited notice of our initial closure and did not have time to prepare the supplies our students needed. Distance learning quickly became the way our students would learn for the remainder of the year and they have been required to do so without necessary materials. We teach in a low-income school where all students receive free lunch. The kindergarteners have been forced to learn digitally with limited technology. Parents are forced to teach their children while struggling to continue working and putting food on the table.

In a short amount of time, the kindergartners had to learn how to learn digitally!

A grade that is based on hands-on learning and relationships has become a series of online documents. Not only did they have to deal with school being closed for 3 months, but we moved to a new building in January and these students had to adjust to a new environment mid-year. Their homes make the 3rd learning environment for them in one school year!

My Project

With this project, we will be mailing out superhero capes and certificates to the kindergarten students to show them they are the true superheroes! This group has been through so much uncertainty with distance learning and moving to a new building mid-year.

For many of our kids, this was their first experience at school and it was a difficult and unsettling one.

They deserve to be celebrated for their hard work and flexibility. At 5 years old, they had to learn to make the best out of difficult situations and did better than we could have ever expected!
